These exercises can be done together during conversation lessons or as homework.

Exercise 1: Conversation exercise

Instruction:

Stel je voor dat je op de markt bent. Wat zou je willen kopen? Hoe betaal je? (Imagine you are on the market. What would you like to buy? How do you pay?)
Noem en bespreek de prijzen. Is het goedkoop of duur? Vraag om korting. (Name and discuss the prices. Is it cheap or expensive? Ask for a discount.)

Teaching guidelines +/- 10 minutes

Example phrases:

Ik wil wat brood en appels kopen.

I want to buy some bread and apples.

Ik wil niets kopen.

I don't want to buy anything.

De sinaasappels zijn behoorlijk duur.

The oranges are quite expensive.

De uien zijn goedkoop.

The onions are cheap.

Instruction: Select a situation and practice the conversation with your teacher or fellow students.

Example 1

Klant: Hoeveel kost deze fles melk?

Customer: How much does this bottle of milk cost?

Medewerker: Die kost twee euro.

Employee: That costs two euros.

Klant: Heeft u genoeg appels?

Customer: Do you have enough apples?

Medewerker: Ja, er zijn veel appels vandaag.

Employee: Yes, there are a lot of apples today.

Example 2

Klant: Wat kost een brood hier?

Customer: How much does a loaf of bread cost here?

Medewerker: Het brood kost anderhalve euro.

Employee: The bread costs one and a half euros.

Klant: Is er nog veel kaas?

Customer: Is there a lot of cheese left?

Medewerker: Nee, er is weinig kaas meer.

Employee: No, there is little cheese left.

Example 1

Klant: Hoeveel kost een kilo tomaten?

Customer: How much does a kilo of tomatoes cost?

Marktkramer: Dat is drie euro per kilo.

Market trader: That is three euros per kilo.

Klant: Ik neem twee kilo, hier heeft u vijf euro.

Customer: I'll take two kilos, here is five euros.

Marktkramer: Dank u, hier is uw wisselgeld.

Market trader: Thank you, here is your change.

Example 2

Klant: Wat kost een bos bloemen?

Customer: How much does a bunch of flowers cost?

Marktkramer: Die kost vier euro.

Market trader: That costs four euros.

Klant: Ik heb genoeg geld, ik betaal contant.

Customer: I have enough money, I will pay cash.

Marktkramer: Goed, hier zijn de bloemen en uw wisselgeld.

Customer: Is there any discount on this coat?

Salesperson: Yes, there is a ten percent discount.

Klant: Hoe kan ik betalen?

Customer: How can I pay?

Verkoper: U kunt betalen met pin of contant.

Seller: You can pay by card or cash.
