Reading and listening exercise

Nederlandse en Vlaamse steden staan vol met bijzondere gevels. Deze gevels maken de steden enorm mooi. In de zeventiende eeuw bouwen mensen huizen met hoge en smalle voorgevels. Dat komt omdat de belasting vaak wordt berekend op de breedte van het huis. Een smal huis is dus goedkoper. Een typische Nederlandse gevel is de klokgevel. Deze gevel heeft bovenaan een vorm die lijkt op een kromme lijn. Andere gevels hebben rechte lijnen, met bijvoorbeeld een driehoek bovenop. Soms zetten mensen ook een vierkant of een rechthoek in hun gevel. Veel oude huizen hebben een hoge en smalle gevel. Die gevels passen goed in de kleine straten van de oude steden. Nieuwe huizen zijn vaak breed en laag.

Dutch and Flemish cities are full of special façade designs. These façades make the cities incredibly beautiful. In the seventeenth century, people built houses with tall and narrow frontages. This was because taxes were often calculated based on the width of the house. A narrow house is therefore cheaper. A typical Dutch façade is the 'clock façade.' This façade has a shape at the top that resembles a curved line. Other façades have straight lines, with, for example, a triangle on top. Sometimes people also include a square or rectangle in their façade design. Many old houses have tall and narrow façades. These façades fit well in the narrow streets of older cities. New houses are often wide and low.
